DEDICATION

Dedicated to my dear daughter Susan Mahan. Susan, currently pursuing studies, including: modern history courses, at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, has kindly invited me to provide her with a personal history of some of my experiences as a naval officer serving in the Pacific during World War II.

Although flattered by her request, I was also a bit puzzled when, for some reason, she added that a historian, according to Tacitus, should be “SCIENS ATQUE VERAX.”
